Long before this photo was taken, I took classical guitar lessons from a German refugee who, with his family had escaped from the Russian sector of East Berlin. He was fluent in five languages and played classical guitar beautifully. Sometimes he and his father would entertain me with a guitar / mandolin duet. The mother always had a delicious snack, that she had just finished cooking, laid out for us when my lesson was done. All this for just .00 per lesson. Even then, that wasn't very much for what I was getting.
I got to the point where I could play a few pieces by people with names like Fernando Sor and Antonio Carulli. Incredibly beautiful music. I had a Goya guitar, which is one of the best classical guitars.
All this ended shortly after I married the first time. She had two children from a first marriage and we soon had twin boys. Many things had to change, including my skiing days and my music lessons. I did manage to hold onto the guitar for some time, but finally sold it. The guitar in the photo was a much cheaper version which I bought some years later. By then, I could not play very well and my fingers were starting to get arthritic. So, I gave that up. BUT, I bought a keyboard and learned to play it, mostly on my own. So now, I play my wonderful Korg keyboard every day.
So, this is how it is in my life as a musician.

I'm going to begin taking guitar lessons through the college beginning this Wednesday after work at no cost, which is a handy fringe benefit to working at a college with a music program. My friend and colleague from work, Erica, is also taking guitar, but she had an extra she generously offered to lend me this semester. I'll be learning classic guitar even though I wanted to learn how to play chords so I could accompany myself while singing. Whatever. Free lessons are free lessons and the instructor is supposed to be incredible so I'm very much looking forward to the challenge even though my left hand is not so much (callouses in 3...2...1).

Hello gem66, It is sad that you had to give up the guitar and I know you miss it. I have always wished that I could have played an instrument, but I am not even 1% musical. What kind of music do you enjoy? I like dixieland jazz and ragtime piano and about anything from the 30′s backward. Take care. Regards.

Thanks, kazootus. I do miss the guitar. It is a beautiful instrument. However, my piano makes up for it and I can play it without as much pain. Fortunately, I can play for quite awhile without my hands starting to hurt too much. This is not true of acousitic pianos, but my digital keyboard is very easy on the hands.

Yamaha is good too. I like the Yamaha Clavinova digital piano. One of the best, but beyond my means.

Sad story and in the same time wonderfull, thank you for telling it to us. Good that you can do some of the music, you love with the digital piano now.
We give up a lot, when we think it is more important other things, sometimes without regret, sometimes it is not worth, but who knows beforehand? (I gave up for years writing my journal for my first husband) for example.

Gary, this reminds me of something I should ask you. My son wanted me to take up guitar again but I don’t think I can because I feel a little arthritic, too, these days. You mentioned a keyboard, which I’ve never played, but always wanted to (I played some piano as a kid but have totally forgotten everything). Do you find that’s ok with your hands?

Thanks Julie. I would love to be able ot play classical guitar, or any other kind of guitar as far as that goes. But it is OK. I play harmonica as well as digital piano, so I don’t have any problem in making music.

You have to push harder. If you do buy a digital piano, get a good one. Go to a real piano store. Don’t buy one of those cheapies you see in the mall and at Walmart. I assume you will get a teacher if you do start this. I had about a dozen lessons to get started. Not enough, really, but I couldn’t stand the slow pace. I still can’t read music at all, but my talent is in composing as I play. I just play whatever music comes to me. I have taught myself to play a few songs that other people have written, but not many.

Thank you Jim. I have piano lessons owed to me. Lessons that I’ve paid for. My teacher is a personal friend and has told me to come over any time. Maybe I’ll do that one day. She is a dazzling pianist!
One thing about being self taught and not having to depend on notation (sheet music), I have really gotten to know the keyboard. When I hit a key, I know what it is going to sound like. When I’m improvising, I almost always know which key or chord to hit next. I used to work with a woman who played piano very well, but she couldn’t play a thing without the music notation in front of her. She couldn’t even imagine just making up a song as she went along. I’m just the opposite. I can’t imagine reading the music. Maybe that’s why I can’t.
